In this article, I’m going to layout, from start to finish, your beginner real estate SEO plan from a high level.

This article isn’t meant to delve into loads of detail for each step (we’ll do that in future articles), but to give you an overview of everything you’ll want to do to get your website ranking and pulling in passive traffic and leads.

It’ll take time and it’ll take work (but maybe not as much time or work as you think).

But before we dive in… Here’s a quick example of the results you can achieve by having a solid SEO plan…

High-level Real Estate SEO Plan for Investors Who’ve Never Done SEO Before

Step #1: Choosing a Website Builder That’ll Get The Tech Stack Right

The first thing you need is a website builder that isn’t going to sabotage your SEO efforts down the road. If you use a website builder (or website hosting, for that matter) that has slow load times, a clunky experience, or isn’t mobile friendly, that choice can hurt your rankings. Regardless of how hard you work to rank for a certain keyword phrase, you need a website that supports you.

These are important for Google which means they are important for your SEO rankings.

The website builder you choose must be ready to support your SEO efforts with speed, mobile-friendliness, and clean user experience. Otherwise, you’ll be fighting an uphill battle.

Step #2: Choosing a High-value Keyword Phrase for Your Homepage

Assuming that you’ve chosen a website builder that’ll help your SEO efforts rather than shunting them, the next step is to decide on which keyword phrase you want to target on your homepage.

Only choose one phrase to target with each page that you’re trying to rank (homepage included). You might get lucky and pull rankings for multiple phrases, but don’t try to — you’ll just end up diluting your efforts for any single keyword phrase.

For most real estate investors, phrases like the following will do the trick.

  • “Sell my house fast in [target market]”
  • “Sell my house for cash in [target market]”
  • “Sell my house fast for cash in [target market]”

You can also do some of your own keyword research over on Ubersuggest — just make sure that the keyword phrase you choose is market-specific. That will make it far easier for your website to rank and the traffic you pull will be far more valuable.

Step #3: Optimizing Your Homepage

Now that you know which phrase you’re going to try and rank your homepage for, it’s time to put in the leg-work. So what do you do?

Well, we’ll talk about this in more detail in an upcoming article, but here’s a high-level overview of the things you’ll want to do on your homepage 

  • Have between 1% and 2% exact match keyword phrase density — This means that, if your homepage were 1,000 words, you would have the exact keyword phrase you’re trying to rank for on the page between 10 and 20 times.
  • Sprinkle LSI keywords throughout the page — LSI means “latent semantic indexing“… which basically means that Google can tell when two words have the same intent so Google treats them in a similar way.
  • Optimize the alt text of images on the page to be relevant to your target keyword phrase.
  • Aim for about 2,000 words of text — this will give you a better chance of ranking since Google prefers longer pages.
  • Include your keyword phrase in the heading of your homepage

Step #4: Optimizing Your Title Tag and Meta Description for Your Homepage

The final step (when you’re just getting started, at least) is to add your exact match keyword phrase to your title tag and meta description. 

This is one of the main things that Google references when trying to decide where to rank your website, so you definitely don’t want to miss this step.

Notice how most of the title tags and meta descriptions include something very similar to the phrase I typed into Google.

Most good website builders that are meant to help you with your SEO efforts will give you the ability to easily customize the title tag and meta description of any page.

Step #5: Repeat Steps #2 – #4 for All Your Landing Pages

Now, repeat steps #2 – #4 for any additional landing pages you have on your website. If you operate in multiple markets, for instance, you should have a different page that’s optimized to rank for each market’s specific keyword phrase.

You could even go as far as having a page for different kinds of sellers or different kinds of buyers — just change up the keyword phrase you’re targeting and that will change the people you draw to your website with SEO.

Each well-done niched location page will likely take you between 30-60 mins. But it’s well worth the time investment for the long-term momentum building results you can get.

 

Step #6: Publish Optimized Content Consistently

Nothing tells Google that you’re up-to-date and an expert in your industry quite like consistently publishing new content on your website (often a blog). Plus, the more content you have, the more chances you have to rank for different phrases in Google (each blog post has a chance to rank).

Create a cadence (once a week or twice a month is healthy) and stick to it.

Conclusion

Now you have an overview of what needs to happen in order for your website to start collecting rankings for high-value keyword phrases. This is just the beginning, of course, but it’s a critical first step.

Depending on how competitive your market is, you might even be ranking in a few weeks with attentiveness to the above strategy. For most of you, it’ll take a bit more work.
